10 TSA Approved Items that Could be Used For Self Defense
Carrying self-defense weapons while traveling can provide a sense of security and empowerment in potentially dangerous situations in very unfamiliar places. The tricky part is being able to feel safe and empowered when TSA can be so strict. Let's be creative and see how we can slide through TSA with already approved items that could be used as a weapon for self-defense if needed.
First we will look at approved carry-on baggage items. Keep in mind carry-on means packed in the bag you are carrying on, not worn. Second, we will look at approved self-defense items you can pack in your checked baggage. Lastly, we will consider some discreet items that we could potentially get away with depending on our attitude going through TSA and the mood of the person screening us.
TSA Carry-On Baggage Approved Items that Could be Used for Self Defense
Keep in mind even if you plan on wearing any of these items on you when you go through security checkpoints be sure to have them nicely packed in your carry on bag. Put them in there just to pass through security with no hassle and then you can put them back on your person. Just like you would remove your belt, watch, and jewelry. Remember your keychain, coins, and devices should be in your carry-on bag and not in your pockets when you pass through TSA. The idea is to not be there any longer than we need to be.

Self Defense Mindset While Traveling
Traveling to new and unfamiliar places can be an exciting adventure, but it's important to prioritize your safety. Here are 5 essential self-defense tips to keep in mind when you're on the go:
1. Be Aware of Your Surroundings
One of the most important self-defense tips for travelers is to always be aware of your surroundings. Stay alert and pay attention to the people and environment around you. Avoid distractions like looking at your phone or wearing headphones, especially in unfamiliar or crowded areas.
Self Defense Lady Personal Tips:
- Don't count cash in public - I have seen this so many times traveling. If you are going to an ATM, take your cash and put it away! You can't debate the machine giving you the wrong amount anyway. Put it away and move on. If you are at a money exchange and unsure if they counted it back correctly kindly ask them to do it again for you slowly. Don't take the money and recount it away from the counter.
- Keep small bills separate from your wallet - This means you can easily and discreetly pay the cab driver, throw some money in the hat for street musicians, and pay for small items without having to pull out your whole wallet and look through your items in public.
- Plan out your general travel route before leaving your hotel- If you have a general idea of where you are headed this will help you avoid missing out on all the great sights around you and prevent you from looking like an unsuspecting target.
2. Trust Your Instincts
Your instincts are a powerful tool when it comes to self-defense. If something feels off or makes you uncomfortable, trust your gut and remove yourself from the situation. It's better to be safe than sorry, so don't ignore any red flags that may arise during your travels.
Something else I would like to add is to not feel ashamed to ask clarifying or confirming questions. We don't want to be rude or annoying, but if you feel unsure about where you are headed with a taxi driver, or being led by someone politely confirm that you are headed to an agreed destination or ask questions that would confirm if you are on the same page.
3. Learn Basic Self-Defense Techniques
Before you embark on your journey, take the time to learn some basic self-defense techniques. Knowing how to defend yourself in a dangerous situation can give you the confidence and skills you need to stay safe. Consider taking a self-defense class or watching online tutorials to prepare yourself. I have a free video 5 Weapons You Have On You Right Now! Watch and practice!
If you feel like it is time for you to start training in a martial art for self-defense check out Google for some Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Schools near you or Muay Thai Boxing. Those are the two martial arts I believe are the best for self-defense and getting in shape read more in this article here.
4. Keep Your Belongings Secure
Protecting your belongings is an important aspect of self-defense while traveling. Keep your valuables close to you and be mindful of pickpockets and thieves. Invest in a secure travel wallet or money belt to keep your cash, passport, and other important items safe and secure.
If you are renting a car be sure to put as much as you can in the trunk before arriving at your final destination and utilize the glove box for storing extra small things. Out of sight out of mind!
5. Stay Calm and Assertive
In the event of a threatening situation, it's crucial to stay calm and assertive. Avoid escalating the situation with aggression, but make it clear that you are not an easy target. Use a confident tone of voice and body language to deter potential threats and protect yourself. If it is a material item they are after be willing to part with it. Material items can always be replaced and it is worth a sacrifice if your safety is on the line.
