Muay Thai: Striking For Women's Self Defense

MUAY THAI FOR WOMEN'S SELF DEFENSE

WHAT IS MUAY THAI?

Muay Thai, also known as the "Art of Eight Limbs," is a traditional martial art form that originated in Thailand. Muay Thai is a combat sport that utilizes a combination of punches, kicks, elbows, and knee strikes. Unlike other martial arts, Muay Thai allows the use of all limbs, making it a versatile and dynamic fighting style. This unique aspect sets Muay Thai apart from other martial arts disciplines.

MUAY THAI IS A FULL BODY WORKOUT!

Unlike traditional self-defense classes, Muay Thai offers a full-body workout that improves strength, flexibility, and endurance. Women who train in Muay Thai not only learn how to defend themselves but also enhance their overall physical fitness, making them better prepared to handle any physical confrontation.

JUMP START YOUR MUAY THAI TRAINING: LEARN THE 5 DEADLY STRIKES YOU HAVE ON YOU RIGHT NOW

  1. Elbows
  2. Hammer Fists
  3. Open Hand Slaps
  4. Knees
  5. Push Kicks aka Teeps

In addition to raising our awareness, using our voice and our body language to communicate boundaries we also come stock with 5 deadly and powerful weapons that can help us defend ourself.

Most people don't have the time to train every day in Muay Thai, BJJ - Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Kickboxing or any other martial art. People are busy- I get it! In this video I aim to bring to awareness the 5 deadly strikes that don't require a lifetime of training, they just require you to be aware that they are there! You might want to save your jab and cross, spare your fingers, and instead slam them with hammer fists and open hand slaps, elbows, knees and push kicks!

I made this video just to open up your eyes to these damaging weapons you have just resting on your desk, helping you push that door open or pound on the wall to get your neighbors attention. I love training in boxing and kickboxing don't get me wrong, but there is a reason boxer's wrap their hands meticulously. It is very common for people who fight even with gloves on to break the bones in their hands even with impeccable technique. That is because our hands are fragile. The slight movement of someone ducking their head while we are punching can cause us to punch the hard skull of their head and guess who would feel it the most? We would. When it comes to self defense there is no wrong thing to do, you do what you have to! This is just a reminder of extra tools in the tool kit. The more options we have the better!

What do I wear to a Muay Thai Class?

1. COMFORTABLE CLOTHING

Opt for breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics such as polyester or spandex. Loose-fitting shorts or leggings and a comfortable t-shirt are ideal for ease of movement during training sessions.

 2. HAND WRAPS & GLOVES

Protect your hands and wrists by wearing hand wraps underneath your gloves. This will provide added support and prevent injuries during striking and sparring drills.

Good Gloves For Beginners: (14 ounce or 16 ounce recommended)

3. MUAY THAI SHORTS FOR MEN & WOMEN

Invest in a pair of Muay Thai shorts, which are specifically designed for the sport. These shorts are typically shorter in length and have wide leg openings to allow for unrestricted kicks and knee strikes. The come in a variety of FUN and LOUD colors! You might want to train just to wear these fancy shorts:) haha

4. BAREFOOT

No shoes needed for training on the mat. Shoes could be required if running is part of your training session.

 5. MOUTHGUARD

Even if you aren't sparring it is a good idea to wear one, sometimes when you hit the heavy bag hard or hold pads for others you might feel the impact in your head. Definitely protect your teeth and jaw by wearing a mouthguard during sparring sessions. This will help prevent dental injuries and reduce the risk of concussions from impact during training.

6. SHINGUARDS

Shin guards can come in handy when first starting out as your legs are getting conditioned to kicking the bag. Shin guards are also required if you plan to get into sparring.

 1) Slip on sock style, can machine wash. Good for beginners getting used to kicking the bag.

2) Sparring/ Partner drill shin guards
